CMA Course Details
By CMA Rohan Sharma · 8 min read
One of the most frequently asked questions from students across India is simple but important: "Am I eligible for CMA?" The confusion is understandable — the CMA course has three levels (Foundation, Intermediate, and Final), each with its own entry criteria. Add to that the Direct Entry Scheme for graduates, exemptions for CA/CS professionals, and the lack of a maximum age limit, and many students are simply not sure where they stand.
The good news is that CMA is one of the most accessible professional courses in India. Whether you have just cleared Class 12, are currently pursuing a graduation degree, have already completed B.Com or any other discipline, or are a working professional at age 35 — there is a valid entry point into CMA for you. The key is knowing which level you qualify for and which route to take.
This blog gives you a complete, level-by-level breakdown of CMA course eligibility in 2026 — so you can register with confidence and start without second-guessing yourself.
CMA is one of the few professional courses in India where there is no age bar, no stream restriction, and multiple entry points. The only question is: where do you enter from?
Any student who has passed Class 12 (any stream) can register for CMA Foundation. Graduates from any discipline can directly join CMA Intermediate under the Direct Entry Scheme, skipping Foundation. There is no minimum percentage requirement and no age limit for CMA registration. CA, CS, and ICWA members get direct entry and specific paper exemptions in CMA Intermediate.
CMA Foundation is the entry-level stage of the CMA qualification. It consists of 4 papers covering basic Economics, Accounting, Business Laws, and Business Mathematics & Statistics. The eligibility criteria are deliberately kept simple to allow students to enter as early as possible.
| Criteria | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Minimum Academic Qualification to Register | Passed Class 10 (SSC or equivalent) from a recognised Board |
| Minimum Qualification to Appear in Exam | Passed Class 12 (HSC or equivalent) from a recognised Board |
| Stream Restriction | None — Science, Commerce, Arts all eligible |
| Minimum Marks Required | No minimum percentage required |
| Age Limit | No minimum or maximum age limit |
| Nationality | Indian nationals and foreign nationals (special conditions may apply) |
This means a Class 12 student can register for Foundation immediately after their board exams — they do not need to wait for result declaration if they are confident they have passed. However, they can only sit for the Foundation exam after their Class 12 result is declared and they officially qualify.
CMA Intermediate is the second level of the qualification, consisting of 8 papers across 2 groups. There are two routes to enter CMA Intermediate — the Foundation route (after clearing CMA Foundation) and the Direct Entry route (for graduates and specified professionals).
| Entry Route | Who Can Apply | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation Route | Students who have passed CMA Foundation | Must have cleared all 4 Foundation papers; no minimum marks cut-off beyond passing |
| Direct Entry — Graduates | Holders of any bachelor's degree from a recognised university | Degree in any discipline — B.Com, BBA, B.Sc, B.Tech, BA, etc. Foundation exempted |
| Direct Entry — CA / CS / ICWA | Members of ICAI, ICSI, or qualified ICWAs | Direct entry; specific paper exemptions also available |
| Direct Entry — Pursuing Graduation (Final Year) | Students in final year of graduation | Can register provisionally; must submit degree proof after result |
All students registering for CMA Intermediate (regardless of route) must complete a 100-hour Computer Training programme recognised by ICMAI. This can be done at ICMAI-authorised centres and must be completed before or during the Intermediate stage. Failure to complete Computer Training can delay your ACMA membership even after clearing all exam papers.
Students must also register for Practical Training (3 years duration) either at the time of Intermediate registration or before applying for the Final exam. Practical Training must be completed before ACMA membership is granted. It can run concurrently with your studies.
CMA Final is the highest level of the qualification, consisting of 8 papers in 2 groups (Group 3 and Group 4). You must have cleared all CMA Intermediate papers before you can register for CMA Final.
| Criteria | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Academic Prerequisite | Passed both groups of CMA Intermediate (all 8 papers) |
| Practical Training | Must be registered and partially completed; full 3 years required before ACMA membership |
| Computer Training | Must be completed before applying for Final |
| Management Training (Modular) | Required 15 days of Management Training must be completed at ICMAI-recognised institutes |
| Age / Stream Restriction | None — any age, any academic background |
Once you pass all 4 groups across Foundation, Intermediate, and Final (or Intermediate and Final via Direct Entry), and fulfil all training requirements, you become eligible for ACMA (Associate Cost and Management Accountant) membership from ICMAI. Senior members with additional experience progress to FCMA (Fellow Cost and Management Accountant).

Explore the Course →The Direct Entry Scheme is ICMAI's mechanism to allow graduates and professional qualification holders to bypass CMA Foundation entirely and join directly at the Intermediate level. This is the fastest route for anyone who already has a degree.
There is no age bar and no requirement to be a full-time student for CMA registration. A working professional at age 30, 35, or even 45 can register for CMA Intermediate (via Direct Entry if already a graduate) and appear in exams. CMA exams are conducted in June and December, which gives working professionals ample time to plan their study schedule around job commitments. The practical training requirement can be fulfilled through the candidate's existing employment if the employer is an ICMAI-recognised organisation — this eliminates the need to take a separate training placement.
Students who have cleared CA Intermediate (IPCC/Intermediate) or CA Final can apply for CMA Intermediate directly. CA members (qualified Chartered Accountants holding ICAI membership) get direct entry to CMA Intermediate and are eligible for specific paper exemptions. The exact number of papers exempted depends on ICMAI's current list — check icmai.in for the updated exemption schedule. This route is ideal for CA students who have taken multiple attempts or wish to add CMA as a complementary qualification.
CS Intermediate and CS Final cleared students, as well as qualified Company Secretaries (ACS/FCS), can apply for CMA Intermediate under the professional entry route. Paper-level exemptions are available for specific papers where the CS syllabus overlaps with CMA content — particularly in Company Law, Taxation, and Financial Management papers. Verify the current exemption list before registering as ICMAI updates it periodically.
When registering for any level of CMA online at icmai.in, you will need to upload scanned copies of your documents. Having these ready before you start the registration process will save time and avoid rejection due to incomplete submissions.

Explore the Course →A student who has passed Class 10 (Secondary School Certificate or equivalent) from a recognised board is eligible to register for CMA Foundation. However, they can only appear in the Foundation exam after passing Class 12 (Higher Secondary or equivalent).
Yes. There is no restriction on stream. Students from Science, Arts, or any other stream can register for CMA Foundation after Class 12. The Foundation papers cover basic accounting and economics, so a commerce background helps but is not mandatory.
The Direct Entry Scheme allows graduates (any discipline) and CA/CS/ICWA members to directly register for CMA Intermediate, bypassing Foundation. Graduates need to have a recognised bachelor's degree. They must complete Computer Training and register for Practical Training as part of the CMA registration requirements.
No. ICMAI does not prescribe any maximum age limit for CMA registration. Students and working professionals of any age can register for CMA Foundation, Intermediate, or Final as long as they meet the academic qualification criteria.
CA Inter or CA Final students and members can apply for CMA Intermediate directly under the Direct Entry / exemption route. CA membership holders may also get exemptions in specific CMA Intermediate papers. Always verify the current exemption list at icmai.in as ICMAI updates these from time to time.
CMA is designed to be inclusive. From a Class 12 student in a small town to a 40-year-old accounts manager in a mid-size company — ICMAI has kept the entry bar low and the pathways multiple. The most important thing is not to let eligibility confusion delay your start. You almost certainly qualify for at least one entry point right now.
If you have just passed Class 12 — register for Foundation today. If you are a graduate — check out the Direct Entry Scheme and skip a year of Foundation. If you are a working professional — your employer may even count as your Practical Training organisation, saving you from needing a separate placement. There are very few situations where someone genuinely cannot pursue CMA, and the path forward is almost always clear once you check icmai.in for your specific case.
Stop waiting for the "right time" to start. The right time for CMA is the moment you meet the minimum eligibility — and for most people reading this, that time is already here.
