CMA Stage-Specific Guidance

What to Do After CMA Intermediate: Job, Training or CMA Final?

By CMA Rohan Sharma  ·  {{DATE}}  ·  10 min read

Short Answer: You do not have to choose just one. The most efficient path for most CMA Intermediate passers is: start a qualifying job (which counts as practical training) AND begin CMA Final preparation simultaneously. You earn income, fulfil your training obligation, and progress towards your Final — all at the same time.
01

The Three Options After CMA Intermediate

After passing CMA Intermediate (one or both groups), you technically have three broad options. Let us define each one clearly before comparing them:

1
Option A: Start Practical Training (Formal ICMAI Training)
Register for ICMAI's formal practical training programme under an approved trainer — typically a practising CMA firm or a qualifying company. This fulfils the 15-month training requirement on a structured basis. You may or may not receive a stipend. Best for: those who want to get training completed quickly as a dedicated focus.
2
Option B: Start a Job (Which Also Counts as Training)
Join a qualifying company as a salaried employee. If the company meets ICMAI's criteria for training registration, your employment itself counts as practical training. You earn a salary, gain industry experience, fulfil the training requirement, and can simultaneously prepare for CMA Final. Best for: most students — combines income, experience, and training.
3
Option C: Focus Only on CMA Final Preparation
Delay both work and training and dedicate yourself full-time to CMA Final exam preparation, typically for 6–12 months. Best for: students with strong financial support, those who want to clear Final in minimum time, or those who scored well in Intermediate and want to maintain momentum. Downside: no income, training clock does not start.
The key insight: Options A and B are not mutually exclusive with CMA Final preparation. You can and should be studying for Final regardless of which training path you take. The training and Final exam are parallel tracks, not sequential ones.

What ICMAI Actually Requires: Training Rules Explained

Before deciding your path, understand exactly what ICMAI mandates. This is frequently misunderstood.

The 15-month practical training requirement:

  • You must complete 15 months of practical training before ICMAI will grant you ACMA membership — regardless of when you pass CMA Final.
  • Training can be done under a practising CMA (formal ICMAI training) or in a qualifying industry organisation (employment-based training).
  • Training cannot begin before you pass CMA Intermediate Group 1 (or both groups — verify current rules on icmai.in as this has changed across regulation revisions).
  • Training must be registered with ICMAI within the prescribed period after it starts. Do not delay registration — this is a common, costly mistake.
  • Training can run concurrently with CMA Final exam preparation. There is no requirement to finish training before appearing for Final exams.
  • The training clock does not pause if you change jobs — as long as your new employer is also a qualifying company, the training continues without a break.

Many students think they must complete training before appearing for CMA Final. This is incorrect. Training and Final are parallel obligations — both must be done before ACMA membership, but neither is a prerequisite for the other.

What counts as a qualifying employer for training:

  • Companies with paid-up capital of Rs 25 lakh or more (older criterion — verify current threshold with ICMAI)
  • Companies where cost audit is applicable under the Companies Act
  • PSUs and government undertakings
  • Practicing CMA firms with ICMAI registration
  • Banks, insurance companies, and certain other regulated entities

Always confirm with ICMAI's regional office whether a specific employer qualifies before registering your training.

Paths with Timelines and Trade-offs

PathTimeline to ACMAIncome During This PeriodTrade-offsBest For
Job + CMA Final simultaneously (most common)15–24 months from Intermediate passRs 4.5–8 LPA (fresher salary)Requires strong time management; slower Final prep paceMost students — practical and financially sensible
CMA Final first, then job/training18–30 months (Final takes 6–18 months, then 15 months training)None until job startsFaster path if Final cleared quickly; zero income during Final prepStudents with strong family support; those close to clearing
Training only (no job, formal ICMAI training)15 months training + FinalStipend only (Rs 3,000–8,000/month)Low income; good for learning in practice environmentThose wanting CA-firm type experience under CMA practitioner
Job only (delaying Final)3–5+ years (if Final kept getting delayed)Good incomeCommon mistake — career progress stalls without FinalShould be avoided
Warning: The "job only, Final later" trap is real. Many CMA Intermediate passers join jobs intending to start Final preparation "after settling in" — and then 2–3 years pass without clearing a single Final paper. If you take a job, set a concrete date for your first Final exam attempt and register for it before you join.

Decision Framework Based on Your Situation

Use this framework to determine which path suits your specific circumstances:

Your SituationRecommended PathReasoning
Financial pressure — need income nowJob + Final simultaneouslyEmployment provides income; qualifying job counts as training. Register for Final in next available session.
Strong family support, no income pressureFull-time Final preparation firstClear Final faster (6–12 months), then join job. ACMA membership in 18–24 months total.
Campus placement offer in handAccept the job; register for FinalCampus placements are time-bound. Take the job, register for Final within 2 months of joining.

Most coaching institutes recommend starting with Group 3 as it has Paper 15 (Strategic Cost Management) which builds directly on Intermediate costing knowledge. Paper 14 (SFM) is often considered the most challenging and benefits from early preparation.

06

Common Mistakes After CMA Intermediate

  • Not registering training with ICMAI on time. Training must be registered within the prescribed period of starting. Many students start working but forget to register — then find months of training do not count. Register immediately when you join.
  • Waiting to clear both groups before starting Final. If you have cleared Group 1 of Intermediate, verify whether you can start your training registration. Do not wait unnecessarily — check current ICMAI rules.
  • Taking a job but delaying Final registration indefinitely. This is the most common and most damaging mistake. Register for CMA Final within 3 months of your Intermediate pass, regardless of your study status.
  • Not verifying whether your employer qualifies for training. Assuming without checking is risky. One phone call to ICMAI's regional office confirms this.
  • Treating Intermediate as the endpoint. CMA Intermediate is the halfway mark, not the destination. Your employability and earning power jump significantly at the Final/ACMA level.
  • Ignoring Group 2 if only Group 1 is cleared. Some students clear Group 1 and join a job, then forget about clearing Group 2. Without both groups cleared, you cannot proceed to Final registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I start a job after CMA Intermediate?
Yes. You can start a job after passing CMA Intermediate. Importantly, qualifying employment (in a company with a specified size and finance function) can count as your mandatory 15-month practical training — meaning you earn a salary while fulfilling your training requirement. This is one of the most efficient paths available.
Is practical training mandatory before appearing for CMA Final?
No — you can appear for CMA Final exams while your practical training is ongoing. ICMAI requires you to complete the 15-month practical training before you can be enrolled as an ACMA member, but it does not need to be completed before you appear for the Final exams. You can study for Final while working and training simultaneously.
Does a job after CMA Intermediate count as practical training?
Yes, subject to conditions. The employing company must meet ICMAI's criteria (typically companies with a paid-up capital above a specified threshold or companies where cost audit is applicable). You must register the training with ICMAI within the prescribed period. Your employer must submit periodic training reports. Always verify current criteria on icmai.in.
How soon after CMA Intermediate should I start CMA Final preparation?
Ideally, start within 2–3 months of your Intermediate result. The CMA Final consists of 8 papers across two groups (Papers 13–20). Most students who complete Intermediate in December start Final preparation for the following June or December session. Delaying more than 6 months without a specific reason tends to increase inertia.
What is the CMA Final paper structure?
CMA Final consists of 8 papers divided into two groups. Group 3 (Papers 13–16): Corporate Laws and Compliance, Strategic Financial Management, Strategic Cost Management and Performance Evaluation, Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation. Group 4 (Papers 17–20): Cost and Management Audit, Corporate Financial Reporting, Indirect Tax Laws and Practice, and Strategic Performance Management and Business Valuation.
Can I do both job and CMA Final preparation simultaneously?
Yes — and many successful CMA Final passers do exactly this. The key is time discipline: dedicate 2–3 hours of focused study per day on weekdays and 6–8 hours on weekends. The CMA Final syllabus is challenging but manageable alongside a finance job, especially because the job provides practical context that reinforces your understanding of key concepts.
