CMA Course Details
By CMA Rohan Sharma · · 7 min read
Understanding the CMA syllabus before beginning preparation is one of the most practical steps a beginner can take. A student who knows the purpose of each paper — not just its name — approaches preparation with more clarity, connects subjects to career application, and is less likely to feel overwhelmed by the volume of content across 20 papers. This blog explains every paper at all three levels in simple, beginner-friendly language.
Applicable syllabus: ICMAI Syllabus 2022 (verify updates from icmai.in). Total papers: 20 (Foundation: 4 + Intermediate: 8 + Final: 8). Foundation: 4 papers — Laws/Communication, Accounts, Maths/Statistics, Economics/Management. Intermediate: 8 papers in 2 groups — Group I (Laws, Financial Accounting, Tax, Costing) + Group II (Operations, Corporate Accounting/Audit, FM/Analytics, Management Accounting). Final: 8 papers in 2 groups — Group III (Corporate Laws, SFM, Direct Tax, Strategic Cost) + Group IV (Cost Audit, CFR, Indirect Tax, Elective). Official study materials: Foundation (icmai.in/ClntStudents/Foundation_Study_Materials), Intermediate (icmai.in/ClntStudents/Intermediate_Study_Materials), Final (icmai.in/ClntStudents/Final_Study_Materials).
CMA under ICMAI Syllabus 2022 has three levels that must be cleared in sequence:
| Level | Papers | Group Structure | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | 4 papers | Single group — all 4 together | Base-building: accounting, law, economics, maths |
| Intermediate | 8 papers | 2 groups of 4 papers each | Professional-depth: tax, cost, finance, audit, management |
| Final | 8 papers (1 elective) | 2 groups of 4 papers each | Strategic depth: advanced finance, audit, law, specialisation |
The structure means that every paper has a purpose that connects to the ones before and after it. Foundation builds the vocabulary; Intermediate builds professional competence; Final builds strategic and application-level expertise. A beginner who understands this progression will see each paper as a building block — not as an isolated subject to endure.
For the passing marks and group-wise rules, read our blog on CMA exam pattern and passing marks explained.
Foundation is the entry level. All 4 papers are examined together in a single session. No paper can be skipped or exempted (no carry-forward in Foundation). Every paper builds the conceptual base that Intermediate and Final rely on:
| Paper | Paper Name | What Skill Does This Build? |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Fundamentals of Business Laws and Business Communication | Legal awareness for business transactions; professional written communication for finance roles |
| Paper 2 | Fundamentals of Financial and Cost Accounting | The accounting base — journal entries, financial statements, basic cost accounting. The most critical Foundation paper for long-term CMA preparation |
| Paper 3 | Fundamentals of Business Mathematics and Statistics | Numerical and analytical tools — ratio, interest, statistics. Requires daily practice throughout preparation |
| Paper 4 | Fundamentals of Business Economics and Management | Economic reasoning (demand, supply, cost, market structures) and management principles that underpin every business finance decision |
Beginner note: Paper 2 is the most important Foundation paper for long-term CMA preparation. Every subsequent level in Intermediate and Final builds on accounting and cost accounting concepts introduced here. Do not treat Paper 2 as just another subject — treat it as the foundation of the foundation.
For the complete Foundation preparation plan, read our blog on how to clear CMA Foundation in the first attempt.
Intermediate Group I introduces the first set of professional-level subjects. These four papers build the core accounting, taxation, cost management, and legal foundation that every CMA professional uses in daily finance work:
| Paper | Paper Name | What Skill Does This Build? |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 5 | Business Laws and Ethics | Company law, contract law, business regulations, and professional ethics — the legal framework within which every finance professional operates |
| Paper 6 | Financial Accounting | Professional-level financial statement preparation — balance sheets, P&L accounts, company accounts, and accounting standards application |
| Paper 7 | Direct and Indirect Taxation | Income tax computation, GST concepts, tax compliance — the taxation knowledge that makes a CMA valuable in every Indian corporate finance role |
| Paper 8 | Cost Accounting | The signature CMA subject: cost classification, cost sheet construction, variance analysis, standard costing, job and process costing — the core of cost management accounting |
Beginner note: Paper 8 (Cost Accounting) is the subject that defines the CMA professional identity. It is what makes a CMA different from a CA or MBA in Indian corporate finance. Give it priority attention. Paper 7 (Taxation) requires currency — always prepare with current Finance Act amendments.
Intermediate Group II extends the professional scope to operations, corporate accounting, financial management, and management accounting — rounding out the complete Intermediate professional competence picture:
| Paper | Paper Name | What Skill Does This Build? |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 9 | Operations Management and Strategic Management | Production planning, operations research, supply chain basics, and strategic management frameworks — the business and operational context for finance decisions |
| Paper 10 | Corporate Accounting and Auditing | Merger and acquisition accounting, consolidated statements, auditing standards and procedures — professional accounting and audit competence |
| Paper 11 | Financial Management and Business Data Analytics | Capital budgeting, working capital management, capital structure, dividend policy, and basic data analytics for financial decision-making |
| Paper 12 | Management Accounting | Budgeting, performance measurement, decision-making, divisional performance, transfer pricing — the management information and control tools that senior finance professionals use daily |
Beginner note: Paper 11 (Financial Management) and Paper 12 (Management Accounting) are the two papers that most directly connect to the FP&A, budgeting, and performance management roles that many CMA professionals work in. These papers reward both numerical accuracy and business interpretation.
Final Group III moves into strategic and advanced professional territory. These four papers require application, analysis, and professional judgement — not just concept recall:
| Paper | Paper Name | What Skill Does This Build? |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 13 | Corporate and Economic Laws | Advanced company law, SEBI regulations, insolvency framework, competition law, and economic regulatory framework — the legal environment for senior corporate decisions |
| Paper 14 | Strategic Financial Management | Advanced capital markets, derivatives, mergers and acquisitions valuation, international financial management, portfolio management — strategic finance leadership capability |
| Paper 15 | Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation | Advanced income tax, transfer pricing, DTAA, international tax concepts — the tax advisory depth that differentiates senior CMA finance professionals |
| Paper 16 | Strategic Cost Management | Target costing, value chain analysis, lean costing, strategic cost reduction, transfer pricing (cost perspective), performance measurement at strategic level |
Beginner note: Papers 15 and 13 require current legislative amendments — the Direct Tax and Corporate Law landscape changes with each Finance Act and Companies Act update. Final-level preparation must include amendment tracking from the beginning.
Final Group IV covers the statutory audit function, complex corporate financial reporting, indirect tax at advanced level, and a specialisation elective — completing the full CMA Final qualification:
| Paper | Paper Name | What Skill Does This Build? |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 17 | Cost and Management Audit | Cost audit standards, cost audit report format, CAS (Cost Accounting Standards), management audit — the statutory audit function unique to ICMAI members |
| Paper 18 | Corporate Financial Reporting | Ind AS application, complex consolidation, business combinations, financial instruments, share-based payments — professional-grade financial reporting |
| Paper 19 | Indirect Tax Laws and Practice | Advanced GST, customs, foreign trade policy — the indirect tax depth needed for advisory, compliance, and audit roles in Indian companies |
| Paper 20 | Elective (one of three options) | Specialisation in chosen area — see below |
Elective options (Paper 20):
Beginner note on Paper 20: Choose the elective based on your long-term career interest — not on perceived difficulty or peer choice. Option (a) is most aligned with mainstream corporate finance and FP&A roles. Option (b) suits BFSI career interests. Option (c) suits entrepreneurship or startup ecosystem aspirations. Verify current elective options from the ICMAI CMA Prospectus at icmai.in before registering.
The CMA syllabus looks large when viewed as a list of papers. It becomes manageable when each paper is understood through one simple question: "What skill does this paper build, and where will I use it in my finance career?"
Beginners should use official ICMAI resources as the primary source for syllabus study — not random PDFs from the internet or older editions that may reflect an outdated syllabus:

Beginners — The Syllabus Is Not the Mountain. It Is the Map.
Every CMA paper builds a skill that finance employers test — cost management, financial reporting, taxation, FM decision-making, audit judgement. Understanding the purpose of each paper makes preparation purposeful. And purposeful preparation produces the qualification that opens the career.
Explore the Course →The CMA syllabus under ICMAI Syllabus 2022 covers 20 papers across three levels. Viewed as a list, it looks large. Viewed as a progressive skill-building system — accounting base, professional competence, strategic depth — it becomes logical and purposeful. Every paper connects to a career function that finance employers hire for.
Beginners should read the syllabus with curiosity rather than anxiety. Ask "what does this paper help me do in a finance role?" rather than "how will I survive 20 papers?" Understand the paper's purpose, start from official ICMAI study materials, verify everything from icmai.in, and build your preparation level by level. The syllabus is not the obstacle — it is the roadmap.
